Calligraphy Letterform Album: 'Kalligraphische Schriftvorlagen' (calligraphic writing styles) was produced in the 1620s in Germany by the scribe, Johann Hering.

Johann Hering (?1580-1647) compiled his album of elaborate calligraphic letterforms, innovative type arrangements and traditional alphabets over a ten year period in the 1620s and 1630s in the Kulmbach region of Bavaria. (Or it was produced sometime during this time frame: it's not clear)

I tend to believe - and I may well be wrong - that Hering's album is more along the lines of a practice manuscript for himself rather than being a true copybook or modelbook* for educational purposes. The majority of the writing is in German (with occasional Latin) and many of the written pages are obviously copied from the bible, particularly the Book of Psalms.

There is next to nothing by way of commentary online about either Hering's life or the background to his amazing album. He is simply described as a 'writing master'. A number of published books are attributed to Hering - most or all on the type/font arts - and one of his handwriting manuals was apparently republished in German in 1982 (although I didn't actually find much of a trail online).

Gods of the Ancients: 'Images Depicting the Gods of the Ancients' by Vincenzo Cartari was first published in 1556. The engravings below are from a 1624 edition (in Italian).

'Le Imagini De gli Dei de gli Antichi' by Vincenzo Cartari (with illustrations based on designs by Bolognino Zaltieri) was recently made available online via Wolfenbütteler Digitale Bibliothek.
[this is the 1664 edition, in the original Italian, with the woodcuts (that first appeared in the 3rd Ed.) replaced by engravings of modest artistic merit perhaps, yet possessing a not insignificant - continuing - contemporary influence].

Misteraitch, at the venerable (and retired) Giornale Nuovo, covered this book some years ago, displaying some woodcut scans from an earlier edition, and including some very useful commentary which is recommended; but I shan't repeat it here. The engravings above seem to be both reversed and modified from the original woodcut layouts.

Instead, as an adjunct, I'll paste in below the (complete and unaltered) translated commentary on Cartari's book from a rare book exhibition at the University of Navarra (in Spain) [LINK]:

"Mythological matter was one of the sources and themes used in literature and art of the Renaissance and Baroque periods, both in its more pagan and hedonistic as its symbolic and moralized version. The myths came to the sixteenth century by two ways: the deformed but very influential medieval transmission, and collected by his humanist philological recovery of ancient texts and testimonies.

One of the works that contributed to the systematization and dissemination of this rich heritage throughout the sixteenth and seventeenth centuries was the work of Italian poet Vincenzo Cartari 'I Imagini Antichi degli degli Dei, nelli cualisono degli Antichi descritte religione him, riti e parrot ceremony with di molto agiunta principalia l'e con l'Imagini Esposizione in epilogue di suo ciascheduna and significance'.

Cartari, of which little else is known other than it was in the service of the house of Este, is known almost exclusively for this work and a versified translation of the Tuscan in meters Fasti of Ovid published in Venice in 1551.

The book is divided into 15 chapters, each of which is one of the main gods and lesser gods and heroes in some way related to it. The subject of each chapter comes from the texts of ancient poets translated by Cartari as Italian poems.

The cause of the success of the work was in addition to its originality in presentation, the only of its kind available in a vulgar tongue. This success was further increased from the 1571 Venetian edition by Ziletti Giordani, who illustrated with 89 large woodcuts opened by Bolognino Zaltieri dimensions.

Samples of undoubted interest aroused by the book are the successive reprints of the original Italian and translations of it made into Latin and French Verdier in 1581.

The copy owned by the Library of the University of Navarra belongs to the first edition of this Latin translation published in Lyon in July Guichard, Barthelemy Honorat and Michel Etienne. The engravings with which it is illustrated are very similar to those of Zaltieri, but sometimes are smaller and are often printed in mirror."

The University of Mannheim has what appears to be a 1581 Latin edition of the 'Gods of the Ancients' (click 'Titel...' for thumbs) -- these are a more sophisticated digital rendering of the original woodcut illustrations, I'd say. It's also probably a more reliable legend for distinguishing Gods in the images above than I might otherwise fumble to misconfabulate.

Artist Matthew Stone shares these striking monochrome photographs of naked nubile bodies entwined and submerged in water from his collaboration with Japanese fashion designer Yuima Nakazato. Created to celebrate Nakazato's spring/summer 2012 collection, inspired by the perhaps contrary theme of a “utopian nudist colony,” the series was shot over two days while camping in a country house garden and has been released as a limited-edition art book, The Body Beyond, by Vogue Homme Japan's Junsuke Yamasaki. "I was impressed that he was much more interested in communicating his wider idea than necessarily ticking all the boxes of showing the clothes," says Stone of working with Nakazato. “I think that’s a smart way to work as it can expand what the clothes mean.” Since graduating from Camberwell College of Arts in 2004, Stone has shown his photographs and sculptures at galleries and biennials across the world, with his first major US show at Kathy Grayson's The Hole gallery in New York last November. Currently preparing for his contribution to the Marrakech Biennale in late February, here Stone discusses performance and beating apathy through optimism.

To what extent does your photography document choreographed events?
I’ve talked about images being semi-staged before, but it’s not my idea to suggest that photography crates a moment rather than documents it. The camera itself invokes a very specific context where people become aware they’re being photographed, there is this performative element. I’ve always thought of performance as about collaborative, unfolding narratives that have a predetermined trajectory that has my hand in it. I’m not trying to remove my hand, I’m not trying to stand outside of the process as I feel it’s a bit of a dated position to try and maintain.

What do you look for in the people you shoot?
A lot of the people I photograph are creative in some sense—everything from composers to designers and artists. The only thing my work is really about is collaboration and community, and thinking about how we can forge that in an authentic way. Ultimately there’s a community that has been globalized by technology. We’re actualizing what might have been determined in the past by mystics as “interconnected consciousness.” I think that technology is the materialized version of spiritualized desire—whether it’s flying through the air or communicating with people who are long distances away, or creating something that is a metaphor of the vast interconnecting nature of humanity.

What does “optimism” means to you?
The quote which I re-quote of myself is “optimism is the vital force that entangles itself with and then shapes the future.” I think all art is optimistic. Essentially, for me optimism is creativity, it’s the force that enables or motivates people to do something rather than nothing.

Lauded for transforming industrial spheres into Pantone-hued “pixel clouds,” New York-based artist and set designer Daniel Arsham shows photographer Tierney Gearon around the surreal sculptures and fictional cityscapes of his new show at OHWOW, Los Angeles, The Fall, the Ball and the Wall. At only 31 the cross-genre savant has collaborated with the likes of former Dior Homme designer Hedi Slimane and choreographer Merce Cunningham on projects that upturn accepted notions of space and structure, such as flooding a stage with tens of thousands of ping pong balls, and “eroding” a pristine dressing room using carved foam. “There’s definitely an uncanny quality about this kind of work, and it comes from this idea that you’re seeing something that you know and have an expectation about,” Arsham says of the works at OHWOW. “It’s like a haunted house; something familiar where there’s something’s not quite right with it.” The artist will soon unveil a commemorative public artwork at the new Florida Marlins ballpark in Miami created by Snarkitecture, the architecture practice he runs with partner Alex Mustonen; he is also currently at work on a furniture line for Chicago gallery Volume. Here Arsham talks deconstruction and dreams.
Where does your fascination with deconstructing form come from?
I grew up in Miami and when I was a kid there was a hurricane that completely destroyed the house that I lived in. The ceiling was ripped apart and there was a big hole in it. Seeing the architecture dismembered in that way was my first experience with what’s inside the walls. They’re built to appear to have this solidity so that we feel like buildings will stand up, but in fact there’s all this crap behind them. So my works allow the architecture to be fluid in a less violent way than I experienced.
Your piece “Hiding Figure” depicts a person trapped inside the wall. How did you achieve such a realistic effect?
I test all of these [sculptures] out with fabric in the studio—one of the assistants was definitely stapled to a wall at one point.
What was the inspiration behind your new architectural paintings, which depict banal words as floor plans for city buildings?
Out of all the products that humans make, architecture is the biggest and most lasting and relevant form of cultural expression—it’s the only thing that’s going to last. And this series plays with the weight of that.

There’s a hallucinogenic quality to a lot of your work. What would you say is your favorite high—natural or otherwise?
There are not unnatural highs in my life. Never was. I’m pretty clean cut. But I have pulled things from dreams before. I had this really weird dream last night that I was in the Italian cruise ship that capsized recently [The Costa Concordia]. I knew that it was going to capsize, so I had already figured out how to walk up the stairwell sideways.

Like his contemporary, Hiroshi Yoshida, Kawase Hasui was a renowned woodblock print artist of the Shin hanga, or “new prints” movement in early 20th Century Japan.

Also like Yoshida, Hasui traveled extensively and produced images of a variety of locations, though not as much outside of Japan as Yoshida. Instead, Hasui sought out remote landscapes within an increasingly industrialized and populated Japan.

His prints are often of scenes in snow, rain, twilight or darkness, though bright sunlight can also play its part, and he can be wonderfully evocative of different atmospheric and light conditions.

Many of his earliest prints, which are considered by some to be his best work, were lost in an earthquake in 1923. They must have been stunning because those that remain are extraordinarily beautiful.

Since my previous post on Kawase Hsui, some new sources for images have become available on the web. In addition to the web resources listed below, there is a currently in print collection of his work Visions of Japan (Kawase Hasui). You can also find his work in broader collections of Japanese woodblock prints.

2-part picture. A procession in honor of the god Bacchus who sits in a chariot. And a procession to the temple with his satyrs and putti and others elated with feasting and dancing. Some play on flutes and tambourines, others carrying sticks or jars with grapes and vines with them.

In the absence of a handy academic storyline to explain the hallucinogenic excesses of **mannerist** ornament, I'm choosing to believe that this array of 'transport' is the mid-16th century equivalent of a bloated movie franchise: the one sequel too many inadvertently became a parody of itself.

These designs are essentially riffing on a seminal technological, artistic and mythological motif from throughout recorded history: the chariot, which was first developed in the Middle East in about 2000 to 3000 BC.

"The chariot, driven by a charioteer, was used for ancient warfare during the bronze and the iron ages. Armor was limited to a shield. The vehicle was used for travel and in processions, games, and races after it had been superseded by other vehicles for military purposes." [W]

"One of the culminating battles of chariotry came early in the 13th century B.C., when armies of the Hittites and Egyptians clashed on the plains of northern Syria at Kadesh. Muwatallis II, the Hittite king, deployed a force of 3,500 chariots, and Ramses II is supposed to have countered in kind, but the battle seems to have ended in a stalemate. By the end of that century, as armies learned to blunt the attacks with swarming infantry and later cavalry, the age of the chariot as a weapon drew to a close. For the sake of brevity we fast forward to Roman times when the ceremony of the Roman Triumph (sanctification of military honour) involved parading of the celebrated hero through the city streets on a chariot. This would seem to be the true origin for the establishment of the chariot as an important iconographic symbol for elevating/feting/honouring/celebrating either man or God in drama and art (mythological in particular : see the final image, pertaining to Bacchus, above).

The chariot, as a symbolic cultural element, followed various paths down through history, from the pageantry and Joyous Entries associated with the festivals of the 16th/17th centuries to parodies in Fractured Fairytale cartoons in the 1960s, by way of polar examples.

My personal view - apply skepticism as necessary - is that the designs above by Cornelis Bos are much less concerned with adding to the visual language of pageantry (or even ornament) than they are with satirising the Renaissance festival culture itself. Ornament that once adorned the embellished chariots and floats of the festival scene has come alive here not as secondary decoration but as the primary focus. The abstracted grotesque figures and mythological details propel our 'taxis' - the almost irrelevant, bizarre land and water transport frames - forward.

Doubtless, art historians would observe these ornamental fantasies and line up to expand on the projected meanings from analysis of allegorical features and symbology. They are welcome to it. I prefer to see the simple humorous mockery of artistic forebears by the emerging talents of a new movement. Mannerist Fractured Fairytales, if you will.

It appears that to bear the weight of mum’s judgement means not only a sore bum but also a dropped halo. It appears that the Aryan half-pint might have again stolen her favourite manicure set from the middle drawer of the bathroom cabinet while he was supposed to be tidying his sister’s bedroom. It does not yet appear that in this act of descending freedom, of vacating a head that others might gild mockingly with thorns, the embarrassing shape of kenotic love is taking costly form. And it’s not as if

there is chaste indulgence here; this act of discipline reminiscent of Michelangelo’s Sistine Christ, this act of judgement upon cobalt and rubicund outlining her own contorted arm and deepening her own overtaxed gaze. A foretaste of arms bearing sin-gnarled stock and hers, those eyes which again will grieve as arms not her own are brought to bear upon her bare first-born, this unexpected fruit in whom her future and that of all shall find shape. And an open roof. Did it fly off with upswing arm so that one who sees everything could weep?

It has been some time too since Paul and Vincent came over, and now this other Paul, André and Max; seemingly unsedated risk now transformed into dispassion. Was Gala really the benchmark of our friendship, our means of communication, our shared wife? What kind of love did we make to each other in her? And what of love once promised now turned, love now come to assault me? A naked face turned away in a sensuous spell.

Liber Floridus: These images come from the fabled manuscript, 'Liber Floridus' (Book of Flowers), a Medieval encyclopædia produced some 900 years ago by Lambert, Canon of St Omer, in the NE France/Flanders/Belgium region.

"For Lambert the encyclopedia is a heavenly meadow where the “flowers of literature” flourish together to attract faithful readers by their sweetness."

The 'Liber Floridus' is essentially a compilation of extracts from nearly two hundred late Classical and early Medieval works by authors such as Isidore of Seville, Orosius, Julius Honorius, Pomponius Mela, Solinus, Venerable Bede, Rabanus Maurus, Pseudo-Callisthenes and Martianus Capella. There are, unsurprisingly, biblical dimensions to the manuscript, including a description of the Apocalypse, and the final illustration above depicts Noah's Ark, for instance.

Lambert's manuscript was completed in his own hand by ~1120 and is regarded as the first encyclopædia of the High Middle Ages. It chronicles the history of the world and describes the cosmos and man's place in the greater whole. Lambert's personal contribution to the work was confined to the fields of cosmography, geography and cartography.

The copious illustrations and idiosyncratic maps ensured that the manuscript came to be regarded as a classic, and up to eight extant copies of 'Liber Floridus' may have survived. [Three contemporary manuscripts exist: Ghent {MS 92} is the original {some of the ending is missing}; and mid-12th c. copies are located at Paris and Wolfenbüttel - these later copies weren't produced by Lambert's hand and contain full mappa mundi-type world maps]

"A medieval encyclopedia has little in common with the modern form of encyclopedia that we know. [..]

Instead of an alphabetical order and rational classification, a medieval encyclopedia has an organic structure. Knowledge is embedded in the images showing the world – a so-called ‘world view’. [..]

Many of these encyclopedias were intended to be used as didactic tools in convent and cathedral schools and, later, in universities. The Liber Floridus was probably used for teaching at the chapter school. The few entries in the Liber Floridus which Lambert did not write himself are assumed to have been done by his pupils."

After some modest reading around on the web, I have come to the conclusion that delving into the cartography - the most interesting aspect of the MS, in my view - is beyond the scope of this post. The various commentaries are more ambiguous than enlightening, because it's hard to properly identify the maps and editions under discussion. Nevertheless, I very much recommend examining the maps (and the rest of the MS) in the rather tolerable high resolution zoom frame at the source site. This manuscript - of about 300 folio leaves - is a real treat to look at closely.

Japanese Family Crests: Kamon are Japanese emblems or crests, corresponding to the European heraldy tradition, that are used to specifically represent and identify a family.

They are a subset of the larger body of motifs (called mon) that are symbols of temples, clans, guilds and similar groups of people. Mon first appeared by the 12th century as patterns on flags and uniforms in battles, but their wider use followed the vagaries of class and social custom.

The quartets of kamon below were selected and spliced together from the symbol categories: animal, plant, flower, furnishing, martialism, natural and pattern crests. {I think there is some crossover}

Mikalojus Vilutis: In two posts at Animalarium, Laura turned me on to Illustrarium, a website for Lithuanian children's book illustrators (Lithuania was the 2011 Guest of Honour at the Bologna Children's Book Fair).
Rooting around on Illustrarium, I found the page for Mikalojus Vilutis (born 1944) and asked him if I could feature his work.

The illustrations in this post come from Fables by Vytautas Landsbergis (Kronta, Vilnius 2011) and A Cake. For many years before illustrating books and working digitally, Vilutis worked in silkscreen/serigraphy and he's known as a master of the method (he's taught at Vilnius Academy of Arts since 1989). I will soon feature some of those earlier works.

A perpetual water-raising system

"Zonca shows a large copperplate engraving of a huge pipe for raising water. It had a large, sealed inverted U-tube with larger diameter on one side. The figure shows the larger tube (A) on the left emptying water at a higher level than the water intake on the right. This water then powered a horizontal turbine at the bottom, which drives a millwheel for grinding grain. The sealed port at the top was to facilitate the initial filling of the tube with water.

For want of a better name, I call this a "perverted siphon", though it doesn't work as a siphon*. (It's so hard to name devices that don't work.) Didn't folks in the 17th century know that siphons can only lift water over an elevation if the output tube's opening is lower than the input water level? Perhaps not. Roman engineers had successfully used water tubes or pipes to transport water over hills, but the output was always lower than the input water level. These tubes were a last resort for engineers, for the apex of the tube could not be higher than 10 meters above the water level at the input end. It was difficult to seal the tubes so that air would not seep into the top of the tube and eventually form an air pocket that destroyed the continuity of the water and halted water flow. Perhaps some felt that it was only such practical "engineering difficulties" that prevented the use of siphons to actually deliver water to a higher level.

Remember that the role of atmospheric pressure in these devices wasn't understood. So why did the water stay in the inverted U-tube? This was explained by Aristotle's principle that "nature abhors a vacuum", that is, nature will not allow a vacuum in the top of the tube and will do whatever necessary to prevent it. This explained why a suction pump could lift a column of water (but didn't explain why it could only lift water about 33 feet)." [cont]. {see also}

As the few online references to Vittorio Zonca (1568-1602) note, little is known about the Italian architect's life beyond the fact that he lived in Padua and wrote an illustrated technical manual on machines.

His book -- part of the Renaissance/Early Modern genre known as The Theatre of Machines -- wasn't released until four years after Zonca's death, and the illustrations seen above are from the 3rd edition, published in 1656.

In 'Novo Teatro di Machine and Edificii', Zonca presents more than forty engravings that illustrate a wide variety of machines, including presses, grinders, locks, pumps, lathes, weight lifting, load bearing and even water-powered silk throwing systems.

The source for many of Zonca’s designs is believed to be a manuscript by the Sienese painter Francesco di Giorgio Martini (1439-1501), which depicts various 15th c. machines.

Zonca's work was nevertheless important and original because it came closest, among contemporaries in the emerging field of technical manuals, to showing how the mechanical systems would function in the real world. Zonca pared down overly elaborate gear/pulley/lever systems (in which friction would hamper machine operation) and he drew the components mostly to scale, as compared to Ramelli for instance. In other words, Zonca's manual was more practical than (merely) theoretical. References in his book infer that working examples of some of Zonca's machines were successfully built during his lifetime.

In the 1620s, a collection of European machine designs by Zonca, Ramelli and Besson was published in China by the Jesuit scholar, Johann Schreck. The illustrations were produced in a Chinese pictorial style and were the first European technological systems seen in the Far East.

"The great advance in Blake's printmaking occurred in 1787, following the untimely death, probably from tuberculosis, of the artist's beloved younger brother Robert [..]. Blake reported discovering his wholly original method of "relief etching" — which creates a single, raised printing surface for both text and image — in a vision of Robert soon after his death.

Relief etching allowed Blake to control all aspects of a book's production: he composed the verses, designed the illustrations (preparing word and image almost simultaneously on the same copper printing plate), printed the plates, colored each sheet by hand (where necessary), and bound the pages together in covers. The resulting "illuminated books" were written in a range of forms — prophecies, emblems, pastoral verses, biblical satire, and children's books — and addressed various timely subjects — poverty, child exploitation, racial inequality, tyranny, religious hypocrisy." Het verloren hervonden landschap

In mijn werk als landschapschilder maak ik al jaren gebruik van foto’s. Soms zijn dat oude vergeten afbeeldingen van bergen en rivieren die in kleine mapjes aan de toeristen zijn verkocht als vorm van aandenken. Sommige foto’s stammen van voor de Tweede Wereldoorlog. Soms zijn het ook foto’s die ik zelf of anderen van landschappen heb gemaakt. Bergen, sneeuwlandschappen, moeras, vennen, rivieren, zijn de thema’s van de foto’s die ik gebruik in mijn landschappen. De foto krijgt een plek op het papier en om de foto heen schilder ik een fictief landschap. De foto geeft de aanleiding en de inspiratie voor het schilderij. Welke gedachten zitten hier achter?

Wij leven in een tijdperk waarin het landschap weinig geheimen meer heeft en niet meer als betekenisvol worden ervaren zoals bijvoorbeeld in de romantiek. De meeste plekken op aarde zijn verkend. En wat geen geheim meer heeft is minder interessant. Deze vorm van desinteresse kan men “landschapsverstoring” noemen die in het eigen lichaam als een vorm van waarnemingsverlies plaatsvindt: het landschap wordt niet meer gezien of het wordt puur functioneel beschouwd als ruimte waar men doorheen moet om van a naar b te gaan. Het landschap beweegt ook niet zoals een film dat doet. Daardoor valt het niet op. Reizigers die een landschap op foto of film vastleggen zien soms pas thuis wat ze hebben gezien. Het landschap is een esthetische categorie geworden. Men kent het uit de kunst en men ziet het ook vanuit de kunstbeleving. We zijn verleerd het landschap te zien zoals het zich voor ons uitstrekt omdat we in een andere tijd leven dan de ontdekkingsreiziger. We zien ruimte vooral om te gebruiken, bergen om te skiën of te beklimmen. Deze verandering van het landschap wordt ook wel een verandering van de plaats in de niet-plaats genoemd (Marc Augé), een kenmerk van de huidige tijd en de huidige mens die nergens meer thuis is. De plaats is geen verzamelpunt van identiteit meer, van geschiedenis en relaties, maar wordt doorgangsplaats, transit-plek, passage. De snelweg leidt door het landschap dat aan het oog wordt onttrokken omdat de weg verdiept is aangelegd. Zo ziet de reiziger alleen verkeersborden. Het landschap is tot tekst geworden. Het landschap is in de greep gekomen van de planners die het als een totaliteit beschouwen die bewerkt moet worden: het totale landschap is een volledig plaats-loos, gemobiliseerd en planloos gecontroleerd landschap (Rolf Peter Sieferle). Daarnaast is de concrete geografie niet meer belangrijk. Daarvoor komt de topologische ruimte in de plaats waarbij de stoffelijke structuur geen rol meer speelt maar waar het cybernetisch denken overheerst. De mens wordt zo losgemaakt van het concrete landschap. Dit denken roept echter ook een tegenbeweging op waarin de aarde als materie nieuwe aandacht krijgt in kunstwerken. Land-art is een vorm hiervan, aandacht voor ruïnes, relicten van het industrietijdperk (Ruhrgebied) en onherbergzame plekken krijgen opnieuw aandacht van kunstenaars als bijzondere plekken. Het bijzondere van het concrete landschap is dat het zich niet laat vangen in een type maar dat het lokaal is, dat wil zeggen aan een plaats gebonden. Het landschap heeft een aura die de beschrijving ervan in een type verhindert. Als ik over woestijnen spreek als type kan ik wel een concreet landschap dat ik heb bezocht voor ogen hebben maar het concrete verhindert de abstractie. Het niet abstraheerbare concrete bezochte landschap met een eigen uitstraling is plaatsgebonden, het is lokaal en je moet er zijn geweest om erover te kunnen spreken. Het lokale karakter van het landschap maakt dat het niet verwisselbaar is met een ander en uiteindelijk onbeschrijfbaar. Elke beschrijving schiet tekort. Het landschap laat zich in geen enkele vorm volledig weergeven (niet in film, niet op foto, niet in tekst, niet in tabellen of grafieken, op kaarten of anderszins). Het landschap opent zich pas als je erin stapt als bezoeker, als met het lokaal ervaart met alle zintuigen, met het hele lichaam. Het landschap doet een beroep op het hele lichaam en is daarin medium voor de esthetische ervaring verstaan als “aisthesis” het Griekse begrip voor waarneming dat meer is dan alleen de visuele waarneming. Het schilderij van het landschap sluit op deze ervaring aan door te laten zien dat het landschap niet weer te geven is, maar dat het schilderij de grenzen van het landschapschilderen zichtbaar maakt. Een goed schilderij laat zien dat het echte landschap nog heel iets anders is als het afgebeelde, het maakt nieuwsgierig. Goede schilderijen gaat het niet om een zo perfect mogelijke weergave van het landschap maar ze verstoren de conventies en formules rond de weergave ervan. Ze zijn een herinnering, eerder een “memento”, dit is niet het landschap. Daarom zijn mijn schilderijen “expressis verbum” verwijzingen, aanmoediging, oproep om zelf in te vullen wat je ziet. De toeschouwer wordt uitgedaagd door de textuur van verf en vormgeving zelf een aandeel te leveren. Het landschap dat zich aan zijn ogen ontvouwt maakt hij voor een groot deel zelf. Daarom is mijn werk grotendeels abstract - rustend op de voorgegeven gebrekkige afbeelding van het landschap, maar uitgewerkt op een geheel eigen wijze met verf (pigmenten, bindmiddel en water) en soms andere hulpmiddelen. Mijn werk is een uitnodiging om het lokale landschap met andere ogen te leren zien als plaats van betekenis. Als plaats van een lokale geschiedenis en van een doordrongen zijn van toegekende betekenis. In mijn serie “Schwarzwald” bijvoorbeeld, beelden uit dit gebied, bewerkt en aangevuld, speelt de lokale geschiedenis mee maar ook het feit dat Martin Heidegger deze plekken beschouwde als “Welt” waarin hij leefde en nadacht. Zij waren zijn tehuis, zijn “gemeinige” basis die hem op ideeën bracht. Zo zijn er veel plaatsen die mijn verbeelding prikkelen en die ik oppak als thema voor een schilderij of voor een serie van landschappen.

Een wandeling met landschapsschilder John Hacking

Zoeken naar de horizon

Hij houdt van wandelen en van de natuur. Hij schildert landschappen met een enorme fascinatie voor de horizon. “De werkelijkheid bevat een poëtische waarheid, naast andere vormen van waarheid.” John Hacking is een van de drie studentenpastors van de universiteit van Nijmegen. Op woensdag is hij meestal vrij. Maar op andere dagen worden studenten en medewerkers van harte uitgenodigd binnen te lopen. De deur staat meestal open. Vandaag komt Leonard Groenveld binnenlopen. Waar komt Hackings fascinatie voor de horizon vandaan? En waarom zuigt het ene schilderij je het landschap in, terwijl het andere je koud laat?

Nijmeegse studenten hadden het er maar moeilijk mee, met het graf dat studentenpastor John Hacking zomer 2009 groef in de tuin van de studentenkerk. En zijn hartelijke uitnodiging om eens een half uur of langer in dat louteringsgraf te gaan liggen, vonden ze eng, freaky en griezelig. “Maar door bezig te zijn met de dood,” aldus Hacking, “ga je als mens pas echt nadenken over het leven.”

Sinds 1999 is John Hacking verbonden aan de universiteit van Nijmegen. Een stap waar hij geen moment spijt van zegt te hebben gehad. “In veel college’s zou ik zo willen aanschuiven om iets op te snuiven van het vak. Vooral als het over geschiedenis, filosofie en kunst gaat.” Hij geniet dagelijks van het werken met studenten en medewerkers, en van hun vragen en interesses, en last but not least van de prachtige omgeving rond Nijmegen.
In zijn vrije tijd trekt hij er graag op uit om te wandelen. En hij schildert landschappen. Bij het maken van onze afspraak was ik er dan ook stilzwijgend vanuit gegaan dat onze wandeling zich buiten de bebouwde kom zou afspelen, richting bossen, velden of uiterwaarden. Maar als ik John Hacking (1956) een week voor onze ontmoeting vraag in welk landschap hij het liefste met me wil wandelen, kiest hij voor het universiteitsterrein. En veel tijd heeft hij niet. Het is en blijft werktijd. Een gesprek van een uurtje, okee, maar dan heeft hij nog meer te doen. Uiteindelijk blijkt onze ontmoeting drie uur te zullen duren.

Leven en dood

De zon schijnt op de afgesproken donderdagmorgen in november. Ik tref John Hacking in zijn werkkamer in de Studentenkerk. Bij een kop koffie raken we in gesprek raken over het door hem zelf gegraven louteringsgraf. Vanwege de blijvende belangstelling van studenten en medewerkers is besloten dat het nog tot eind juni 2010 geopend zal blijven.
Hacking: “In essentie gaat dat graf over het overschrijden van grenzen, om daarachter nieuwe mogelijkheden te ontdekken. Durf je stil te staan bij de dood en zo ja, hoe verhoud je je daar dan toe? Voor veel studenten is de dood een enorm taboe. Daarom vinden sommigen het liggen in zo'n graf een akelig idee. Dan opper ik dat je bijvoorbeeld als medische student intens te maken krijgt met leven en dood. En zo niet in je studie, dan toch zeker in je omgeving.

“Sommige studenten laten zich wel aan een elastiek van een brug vallen, voor de kick. Dat zou je spelen met de dood kunnen noemen.” En net als bij bungeejumping, zegt hacking, biedt ook het louteringsgraf een fysieke ervaring. “Het liggen in het graf beroert je huid; de uiterste grens van het lichaam. Je zzintuigen worden anders geprikkeld. Omdat je ‘slechts’ een stukje van de hemel kunt zien, ga je intenser luisteren. In zekere betreed je via zo’n nieuwe ruimte een nieuwe dimensie. Of zoals een studente zei: ‘Ik besefte opeens dat het leven doorgaat, ook als ik er ooit niet meer zal zijn. En daar had ik helemaal vrede mee’.
“Lust je nog een kopje koffie of zullen we een kijkje bij het graf gaan nemen?”
We lopen naar het louteringsgraf, dat zich in de tuin achter de Studentenkerk bevindt. Het graf is gemarkeerd door roodwit gestreepte linten. “Om te voorkomen dat de tuinman er tijdens het grasmaaien in belandt,” legt Hacking uit.

Anders dan in het vroege najaar, toen er twee houten pallets in lagen, is de bodem nu bedekt met een bed van bladeren. Dat ligt heerlijk, merk ik als ik me even later in het graf neervlij. Het heeft iets weldadigs – om omgeven door stevige wallen van aarde naar de blauwe hemel kijken.

Na circa vijf minuten sluit ik mijn ogen. Het besef dat ik midden in een interview zit, verdwijnt. Daarvoor in de plaats ervaar ik een soort oergevoel; van alle tijden. Even hoef ik me niet staande te houden, ik word gedragen en voel me geborgen. Zo blijf ik een poosje liggen, volkomen gedachteloos. Tot ik in de verte een auto hoor toeteren.
Terwijl ik opsta uit het graf, zie ik John Hacking een eindje verderop lopen. Hij heeft zich even teruggetrokken, maar hier is hij weer. Hij ziet nogal wat overeenkomsten tussen het louteringsgraf en een landschapsschilderij, zegt hij. “In beide gevallen gaat het immers om ruimtes die de geest prikkelen tot een nieuwe kijk.”

Troost

Op de campus is het intussen een komen en gaan van bedrijvige studenten, lopend of fietsend. Een levend schilderij in een decor van kolossale universiteitsgebouwen. Hacking: “Als je goed kijkt zie je dat iedereen haast heeft. Op weg naar het volledige college. Tussendoor even de voicemail afluisteren, een snelle hap. Dit hele landschap staat bol van de activiteit. Overal waar de studenten tijdens de introductiedagen een kijkje nemen, moeten ze iets dóen. Ze zijn dan ook heel verbaasd als ik ze voorstel een half uurtje te gaan zitten en helemaal niets te doen. Een moment van bezinning, met ruimte voor het voelen van eenzaamheid.”

We lopen via het terrein van de Radboud Universiteit naar Park Brakkenstein. Een fraai park in landschapsstijl, met grote grasvelden en daartussen groepjes bomen. De hectiek van de campus maakt plaats voor de rust van het landgoed.
Terwijl we wandelen door een laan van eeuwenoude beuken, zegt Hacking: “Zo'n landschap doet iets met je. Je kunt stil worden van de grootsheid, het imposante. Je kunt je er zowel verloren in voelen als getroost.”

Landschapschilders doen dat in verhevigde mate, zegt hij, dat toedichten van een bepaalde betekenis aan het landschap. “Dat zie je bijvoorbeeld bij Armando. Als kind groeide hij op in de nabijheid van Kamp Amersfoort, en dat zou hem zijn hele leven blijven beïnvloeden. Hij schilderde tal van landschappen waarin het oorlogsdrama zich vermengde met de natuur.
“Veel mensen zien de natuur – aangelegd of niet – graag als puur. Maar Armando schildert bomen die boosaardig zijn. Bomen die immers alle gruwelen hebben gezien, en die daar niks aan hebben gedaan. Daarom spreekt Armando over een ‘schuldig landschap’. Als toeschouwer van zijn geschilderde landschappen is het alsof je toegang krijgt tot die andere dimensie. Je ziet en ervaart dat het landschapsschilderij meer is dan alleen maar wat verf en een ondergrond. Je betreedt een andere ruimte en wordt daarvan deelnemer.”
Wacht even. Hoe kan ik een landschapsschilderij als ruimte betreden? “Ja, dat kan alleen in de geest”, zegt Hacking. “Maar omdat het lichaam ook van dienst te zijn, ontwierp de landschapsschilder Anselm Kiefer later letterlijk ‘andere’ plaatsen in zijn atelier. Ruimtes waar je letterlijk in en uit kon lopen. Hij noemde deze ruimtes onder meer ‘hemelpaleizen’, waarmee hij verwees naar de joodse mystiek.

“In een nieuw filiaal van Albert Heijn weet je vrijwel meteen feilloos de weg. Dat is prettig, maar ook een beetje saai. Daarentegen word je in de fysieke ruimtes van Kiefer voortdurend voor verrassingen geplaatst. Niet voor niets hebben veel van zijn werken de titel ‘Labyrint’. Het leuke van een labyrint is dat het niet uit maakt van welke kant je binnenkomt. Zo kijk ik ook naar ‘de waarheid’. Hoewel de waarheid voor sommigen ‘heilig’ is, kun je er ook van verschillende kanten naar kijken. Juist die verschillende invalshoeken leveren mij vaak een frisse kijk op de essentie op.”

Via Park Brakkenstein belanden we in de Hortus. Een waar paradijs voor wie een rijk scala aan bomen, heesters, bloemen dicht bij elkaar wil zien. Het ene moment waan je op de rotsige top van een berg, het volgende moment hoor je wind door het riet ruisen.
In dit poëtische landschap spreken we over gedichten. “Ook poëzie is een toegang tot de werkelijkheid, met een geheel eigen lading” zegt Hacking. “Neem Fernando Pessoa. Hij worstelde met de vraag of er een transcendente dimensie is tussen hemel en aarde. Hij zag de bomen, bergen, bloemen – allemaal volkomen aards. En toch eindigt een van zijn gedichten met de zin: ‘En ik ga met hem ieder uur’. Daaraan vooraf gaat bijvoorbeeld dit fragment:

Maar als God de bomen en de bloemen is
En de bergen en het maanlicht en de zon,
Waarom dan noem ik hem God?
Ik noem hem bloemen en bomen en bergen en zon en maanlicht;
Want als hij, opdat ik hem zou zien,
Zich zon gemaakt heeft en maanlicht en bloemen en bomen en bergen,
Als hij mij verschijnt zijnde bomen en bergen
En maanlicht en zon en bloemen,
Dan is het omdat hij wil dat ik hem ken

Sabbat

In de periode december - februari 2006 nam Hacking een korte sabbatperiode. In die tijd ging hij op zoek naar kunstenaars die landschappen schilderen vanuit de vraag of er sporen van het goddelijke zijn aan te wijzen in het landschap. “Een poging om mijn inspiratiebronnen uit de afgelopen dertig jaar te inventariseren. Daarbij werd ik vooral verrast door de Zenboeddhistische benadering.

“Kijk, in het westen heb je de kunstenaar en zijn ideeën. Daar hangt altijd een prijskaartje aan. Een Karel Appel, honderdduizend euro. Een Van Gogh, twee miljoen euro. Vaak verdwijnt het werk zelf achter de prijs en de naam van de kunstenaar.
“In Japan werkt het precies andersom. De kunstenaar die het hoogst aangeschreven staat, is degene die de goddelijkheid van de werkelijkheid het volmaaktst tot uitdrukking weet te brengen. Pas op de onderste trede staat de kunstenaar met zijn ideeën. Dat spreekt me bijzonder aan. Het gaat niet om mij, maar om mijn zoektocht en die zoektocht breng ik als schilder tot uitdrukking.

“Blijft de vraag: wie ben ik, als mens? In mijn vorige baan als basispastor in Badhoevedorp probeerde ik de overledene tijdens rouwdiensten graag in zijn of haar eigenheid te benoemen. Voor mij zijn wij metaforisch gesproken als mens allemaal een ‘ui’. Begonnen met een kiem, waarom steeds meer schillen groeien. Die schillen horen er allemaal bij.
“Als landschapschilder probeer ik verbinding te leggen tussen buitenkant en essentie, en vooral de wisselwerking tussen die twee. In mijn jeugd, toen ik een jaar of zestien was, las ik een boekje over boeddhistische schilderkunst. Ja toen al. Daarin stond de vraag: Stel, je ziet een tijger; wat beeld je dan van die tijger uit op papier of op een doek? Wat je uitbeeldt als kunstenaar is de indruk die de tijger op JOU maakt. Dus niet de tijger op zich, niet de omgeving, nee de emotie die jij voelt bij het zien van een tijger.”

Horizon

We lopen terug naar de Studentenkerk. Hacking: “In mijn schilderijen komt de relatie hemel en aarde voortdurend terug. En het zoeken naar de horizon. De horizon als de denkbeeldige lijn tussen hemel en aarde én de letterlijke scheiding tussen de aarde en wat daarboven komt.

“Zonder die horizon geen scheiding, maar ook geen hemel en aarde. De horizon fascineert mij mateloos, omdat het kijken ernaar en de bepaling ervan ons ruimte geeft. De horizon ligt nooit bij voorbaat vast. De horizon wil ontdekt worden, dat is het mooie ervan; hij verandert, hij verschuift voortdurend. Telkens als wij van plaats verwisselen schuift de horizon op, komt hij dichterbij of verdwijnt juist in de verte.”

Het niet opmerken van de horizon typeert voor Hacking een staat van blindheid. “Van desoriëntatie, van vertwijfeling, zo je wilt. Want het leven is een zoeken en dolen, zonder begin en zonder einde. Je oriënteren op de grond onder je voeten, of de hemel boven je hoofd zonder horizon, is een zinloze bezigheid, want zonder besef van de horizon heb je geen overzicht.

“In mijn ogen is de horizon de bondgenoot van de mens, omdat hij staat voor datgene waar de mens naar kan verlangen en wat hij kan bereiken. Een bondgenoot die dat verlangen voortdurend zichtbaar maakt. Iedere dag opnieuw kun je jezelf de vraag stellen: waar ligt vandaag mijn horizon?

“En via die vraag beland je vanzelf bij de horizon van je innerlijke landschap. Het landschap van de geest, maar ook van het lichaam! Hoeveel ruimte heb je daar? Wat is je uitzicht? Kijk je steeds tegen dezelfde berg op? Waar zie je water? Waar stroomt het?

“En wat als je innerlijke landschap er dag na dag hetzelfde uitziet? Als je daar tevreden mee bent, prima. Maar er dienen zich vele mogelijkheden aan zijn als je daar verandering in aan wilt brengen. Ik houd van de natuur en van wandelen. Ga bijvoorbeeld eens wandelen, met al je zintuigen wijd open. Voel de wind op je huid, hoor de vogels, ruik de aarde, zie je eigen horizon. Je innerlijke landschap schildert zich als vanzelf in je af.”

Die ervaring, aldus Hacking, behoeft eigenlijk geen toelichting, ook al maakt hij er soms schilderijen van, met zelf gemaakte verf. Pigmenten, water en bindmiddelen werken steeds weer anders op elkaar in, heeft hij gemerkt. Spannend noemt hij het dat op die manier ook het toeval een rol speelt bij de totstandkoming van zijn schilderijen.

Uitgangspunt is vaak een concreet landschap, in de vorm van een zelfgemaakte of gevonden foto. Daaromheen schildert hij een nieuw landschap. Soms begint hij met het trekken van een paar lijnen op een vel papier. Dan ontstaat vanzelf een landschap; zonder bijbedoeling, zonder opzet en zonder compositie in het hoofd. Een schilderen in de traditie van de oude sumi-techniek. Het grote gebaar wordt van binnenuit gemaakt. De arm doet het werk. “Het hoofd komt hoogstens achteraan om als het werk klaar is een kleine bijdrage te leveren in de vorm van een betekenis.” Lachend: “Op dit punt wint de schilder in mij het van de theoloog.”

We zijn weer terug bij de Studentenkerk. Hoewel onze ontmoeting daarmee is afgelopen, zou ik graag nog uren samen verder wandelen. Maar voor Hacking roept het werk. Een collega komt melden dat er voortdurend wordt gebeld over de vacature ‘medewerker secretariaat’. De collega gaat nu lunchen. Of Hacking ze te woord wil staan.
Tijdens de terugreis passeren, letterlijk in sneltreinvaart, diverse landschappen de revue, ingelijst door het coupéraam. Soms zie ik de horizon, bijna als een rechte lijn. Soms wordt het royale vergezicht belemmerd door kolossale stadslandschappen of megalomane kantoorgebouwen. Merk dat ik daar nu anders naar kijk. Milder. In al dat steen en beton wonen en werken mensen; unieke levens tussen hemel en aarde. In mijn belemmerde uitzicht is een perspectief ontstaan.

Art and religion
Some reflections about my work as a landscape painter

The horizon is a place of insight. On the horizon heaven and earth are meeting. The horizon is a border and borders are places with possibilities. New things can happen. Old thoughts can be renewed. The horizon shows you where you’re coming from and where you’re going to. The horizon gives you the feeling of space and time – it is the start of an orientation, a perspective on life. Your life.
In the landscape is the border not only point of orientation, he is also the place where you will be in future. The horizon moves, you never get there. That’s important. You are always going on. The border is your perspective.

I believe that there is a poetical truth next to other kinds of truth. In my painting this poetical truth is the most important one. A poem with his layers en dimensions reveals something of the presence of the transcendental reality. In the landscape this transcendence can be discovered. It is not only in the light or the shape of the landscape. Maybe it is a feeling, a thought, some kind of meaning you put in. The landscape can carry you, the meaning comes always afterwards. Your perspective on the landscape is product of your behaviour and your vision.

The message carries the messenger. The scientific believes carries the scientist, the gospel the evangelist. That means that the message is more important. It structures our way of life, our vision on living. It is like a road in the landscape. It is maybe a way to follow or to leave. You never know where this road is going to. Only by following it, you will discover. The same with freedom, there is no way to freedom, freedom is the way. It is the same with love. The same with God and your own believe in the possibilities of a transcendental reality.

In my work I’m not looking for answers. Questions are more important. Painting is a quest, a search, following intuitive expressions. Krishnamurti already said: truth is a landscape with no trails. Therefore I’m going after the questions, and new answers create new questions. I’m quite comfortable with it, because it is like life. The spirit of God needs new words, human words, so that language can inspire. Every time again and again, new people, new words, old events, new meaning. You’re in this process, a never ending story.

To be religious means to be connected. You’re part of it. Religious art connects. It links heaven and earth, human kind and the transcendental. Religious arts points out, it searches beauty, spirit, balance, the deeper layers of life. It is a way to discover and perceive reality in a broader sense. And it can carry you like the landscape carries the people who walk in it.

Kranenburg Bruch paintings

Schilderen: afdrukken van de waargenomen werkelijkheid bewerken.

De collagetechniek die ik hanteer in mijn schilderen heeft verschillende voordelen. Ten eerste levert een afbeelding van een landschap die ik midden op een leeg vel papier plak een aanknopingspunt en tevens uitgangspunt voor een te schilderen landschap. De foto van een bestaand landschap geeft een richting aan, prikkelt mijn fantasie en geeft tevens een kader om de relatie tussen hemel en aarde, boven en beneden vorm te geven. Een berglandschap levert een ander schilderij op dan een foto van een meer, een moeras of een weg. Ook de wolkenpartijen spelen daarin een rol en de weerspiegeling van de hemel in het water van een meer of rivier. In feite leveren de bestaande foto’s van een landschap het motief voor het schilderij. Hoe deze foto dan uiteindelijk deel gaat uitmaken van een groter (en gefantaseerd) geheel is mede afhankelijk van het moment en de keren dat het werk wordt opgepakt en aangepast, net zo lang tot ik tevreden ben. Ik ben tevreden als er verschillende lagen door het werk heen schemeren, als het niet helemaal is dicht gekalkt waardoor er geen enkele vorm van diepte meer aanwezig is. Dat betekent dus op tijd stoppen met schilderen.

Een ander voordeel is dat ik met behulp van een foto niet naar de natuur hoef te schilderen door bijvoorbeeld midden in het landschap te gaan staan en daar te werken. Ik kan gewoon thuis blijven en me daar naar harte lust uitleven. Onafhankelijk van weer en wind. Daarbij is het mij ook niet te doen om afbeeldingen zo getrouw mogelijk weer te geven of in een schilderij voort te zetten zoals de foto zelf een weergave is van een stukje werkelijkheid. Mijn inzet is om de verf die uit pigmenten bestaat, een bindmiddel en water, voor een deel zijn eigen werk te laten doen zodat er minder strakke overgangen ontstaan tussen de geschilderde delen. Het inwerken van de verschillende kleuren op elkaar is voor een deel toeval door de waterigheid van de verf. In de loop der jaren heb ik genoeg ervaring opgedaan om te weten welke kleuren bepaalde reacties op elkaar uitoefenen. Ook afhankelijk van het soort bindmiddel en het soort pigment zijn er diverse varianten van beïnvloeding met typische effecten. Sommige pigmenten trekken zich als het ware helemaal terug waardoor er strakke afscheidingen ontstaan tussen de partijen. Andere weer vertonen een vorm van imperialisme door andere kleuren binnen te dringen en te overheersen. In mijn werk laat ik veel gebeuren en wil ik niet alles in de hand houden.

Mijn schilderen zelf is een accenturen en benaderen van het landschap vanuit de kleur en de structuur van de verf zelf. Sommige pigmenten drogen op zonder dat zij helemaal zijn opgelost in het bindmiddel, andere weer laten na droging een typische kleur achter afhankelijk van het soort papier dat ik gebruik. De mogelijkheden zijn bijna onbeperkt. De foto als uitgangspunt is dan ook de eerste stap in het proces dat zich daarna spelenderwijs ontwikkelt. In feite is schilderen het bedekken van een foto of delen van een foto met lagen verf, of met andere woorden, lagen verf aanbrengen op de “werkelijkheid”, deze zo behandelen met kleur dat er een nieuw geheel ontstaat dat nieuwe betekenissen kan oproepen en waarin de toeschouwer op zijn eigen wijze kan gaan staan. In de serie Kranenburg Bruck in het kwadraat (2011), heb ik eerst een serie van 16 schilderijen gemaakt van een moerasgebied in de buurt van Kranenburg op basis van foto’s. Deze foto’s heb ik uitgewerkt in een landschap. Van deze schilderijen heb ik nieuwe foto’s gemaakt en die heb ik weer als uitgangspunt genomen voor een nieuwe serie van landschappen. De oorspronkelijke foto is nog heel vaag zichtbaar in deze serie. Een soort Droste-meisje-effect (nl. de afbeelding van een meisje op een blikje met chocolaatjes met in de hand weer een blikje en zo verder) Zichtbaar en ervaarbaar wordt zo dat elke laag nieuwe lagen mogelijk maakt en elke betekenis nieuwe betekenissen oproept, zoals het teken dat op zijn gezicht een scheur openbaart waardoor nieuwe betekenissen opdoemen (R. Barthes).

Met deze collagetechniek en de bewerking van de foto in het landschap met verf wordt nog iets anders zichtbaar. Het landschap vormt voor mij een metafoor voor het leven, de levensweg en de houding ten aanzien van je levenstijd en levensweg. Ik ken het landschap dus een metaforische dimensie toe en deze pak ik weer op in mijn schilderijen. Zij vormt uitgangspunt en doel van mijn schilderen. Vandaar de nadruk op de gelaagdheid in mijn werk: doorheen de lagen komen de diepere lagen aan het licht, wat weer een metafoor is voor de religieuze of sacrale dimensie van het landschap. In de lichtval, de stilte, in sneeuw, in de nacht, in bepaalde stemmingen in het landschap komt dit volgens mij aan het licht, of beter gezegd – ik duid hen religieus en sacraal. Daarom heeft het landschap voor mij een diepere, een extra waarde. Het landschap wordt zo deel van mijn gelovige overtuiging dat het goddelijke op de een of andere wijze ook in het landschap aan het licht kan treden. Door mijn schilderen probeer ik dat accent te verlenen. Of dat altijd lukt is natuurlijk de vraag, maar het is wel vaak de inzet van mijn werk.

Leven is je stempel drukken op, leven is je sporen nalaten in, leven is proberen ervan te maken wat ervan te maken is. Het zit er allemaal in “principio” al in, je moet het alleen eruit laten komen. Zo werkt volgens mij inspiratie. Je handen verbeelden in hun bewegingen datgene wat je op papier wilt zetten met verf maar het is geen kwestie van sturen en bepalen. Het is eerder een kwestie van laten gebeuren. Door ervaringen gelouterd weten de handen en armen wat ze doen, aan welke kwasten ze de voorkeur geven en welke bewegingen passen. Het lichaam schildert, het hoofd begeleidt slechts, het hoofd reflecteert en keurt kritisch, maar de handen doen het en het sturende is niet de ratio maar een vorm van intuïtie of inspiratie. De foto die als uitgangspunt dient werkt in die zin vaak inspirerend omdat ze de fantasie prikkelt, opwekt en aanvuurt. Dat werkt zo dat een ouder werk na jaren opeens verwondering kan opwekken vanuit de dynamiek ervan. Dan weet je dat het klopt, dat het resultaat er mag zijn. Dat is voldoende.
